Former backline coach Chris Rossouw says it was a “privilege to have a front-row seat” when Jake White was in charge of the Vodacom Bulls.

Rossouw and forwards coach Andries Bekker were recently sacked by the Pretoria-based union after a string of defeats under head coach Johan Ackermann, White’s replacement.

In an emotional farewell letter, obtained by Rugby365, Rossouw thanks everyone he worked alongside, including White.

White was effectively fired in July last year after reportedly falling out with his assistant coaches and senior players. Yet Rossouw was full of praise for him in his letter.

“Jake – what a privilege it was to have a front-row seat to your time at the Bulls. Being the Bulls’ head coach is arguably one of the hottest seats in world rugby and far from easy,” Rossouw wrote.

“I’ve learned so much from the experience, our rugby chats, and our debates – both the calm and the heated – and it has propelled my growth exponentially. I’ve always tried to act with integrity and stay true to my character. Thank you for believing in me and trusting me to do my thing, even in the heat of the moment.”

Rossouw also mentioned “all the coaches and mentors I’ve worked with – Pote Human, Anton Leonard, Daan Human, Pine Pienaar, Joey Mongalo, Russell Winter, Nollis Marais, Gert Smal, Sean Everitt, Hugo van As, Gary Gold, Werner Kruger, Kennedy Tsimba, Phiwe Nomlomo, Jean Tiedt, Andries Bekker and Johan Ackermann.”

Rossouw described his time in Pretoria as a “fast-paced, fun ride”, highlighting the privilege of working at a union defined by “deep history, immense pride, high expectations, world-class players, and passionate supporters”.

He added: “The memories made on and off the field will stay with me for a lifetime. From tough local derbies, to winning finals and the pain of losing them … the pressure, the camaraderie, and the quiet conversations that shape teams and people alike.”

After seven unforgettable years, my journey with the Blue Bulls has come to an end, and it’s time to say thank you. What began as an incredible opportunity quickly became a home, and I became part of the Bulls family. I’ve met so many incredible people and would like to give recognition to those who made this journey unforgettable.

It’s been a fast-paced, fun ride filled with great memories, one that allowed me to do what I love at a union defined by deep history, immense pride, high expectations, world-class players, and passionate supporters who made every game unforgettable. For that privilege, I will always be grateful.

I’d like to thank the owners, board, Edgar, Willem, fellow coaches, and staff for the experiences, support, and lessons along the way. A special word of thanks to Pote Human, who gave me the initial opportunity to join the Bulls. His trust meant a great deal to me, and he remains one of the finest people I’ve had the privilege to work with.

The memories made on and off the field will stay with me for a lifetime. From tough local derbies, to winning finals and the pain of losing them, moments of brilliance where players achieved the unthinkable, the pressure, the camaraderie, and the quiet conversations that shape teams and people alike. I will miss the players who became like sons, some of the most talented, hardworking, humble, and lekker guys you could ever meet.

Without singling anyone out, I’ve also been fortunate to cross paths with remarkable people who made this journey truly special:

* Daan Human – “Rooms, ek gaan my ligte nou afsit.”
* Pine Pienaar – “Chrissa, ek het julle met 15.” One of the most knowledgeable coaches I know and someone I learned a great deal from.
* Johnny W Meyer – No.1 on my speed dial and proof that hard work and enjoyment can coexist.
* The late Dr Jannie Botha – a mentor, a friend, and my golf partner, who left a lasting mark on me.
* Victor, the security guard at Loftus – a daily example of how to live life with dignity and a smile.
* Efraim and John – the groundsmen, offering perspective beyond the game.
* All the coaches and mentors I’ve worked with – Pote Human, Anton Leonard, Daan Human, Pine Pienaar, Joey Mongalo, Russell Winter, Nollis Marais, Gert Smal, Sean Everitt, Hugo van As, Gary Gold, Werner Kruger, Kennedy Tsimba, Phiwe Nomlomo, Jean Tiedt, Andries Bekker and Johan Ackermann.
