PICS: Fatal collision on R21: Truck driver killed in breakdown incident
One person was killed in a collision involving two heavy-duty trucks on the R21 South near the Atlas Road offramp on Thursday night.
The City of Ekurhuleni’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) said the accident occurred shortly after 9 pm.
According to EMS spokesperson Tikkie MacDonald, emergency services were alerted to the crash at about 21:21 and firefighters from the Albertina Sisulu Corridor were dispatched to the scene.
“On arrival, crews found two trucks that had been involved in a high-impact collision. Preliminary information suggests that the driver of the first truck had suffered a mechanical breakdown and was busy repairing the vehicle when a second truck collided with it from behind,” MacDonald said.
The driver who was working on the stationary truck sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
The second truck driver suffered moderate injuries and was treated on site by Gauteng Emergency Medical Services before being transported to a hospital in Tembisa for further medical care.
Rescue teams secured the scene to ensure the safety of other motorists, while the body of the deceased was handed over to Gauteng Pathology Services.
The scene was later handed over to the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, which will conduct a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The City of Ekurhuleni urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly at night, and reminded the public that life-threatening emergencies and fires can be reported to Disaster and Emergency Management Services on 011 458 0911.
