Wallabies star signs long-term deal

A Wallabies speed merchant has committed his foreseeable future to Rugby Australia and the Waratahs amid code-switch rumours.

Max Jorgensen has already amassed 20 Test caps and revealed he “never really explored” a move to the Sydney Roosters, despite persistent speculation linking him to the NRL heavyweights.

Those rumours resurfaced recently following Angus Crichton’s decision to leave league for rugby, but the 21-year-old winger has instead shown loyalty to Rugby Australia and the Waratahs.

Rugby Australia confirmed the five-year deal will make Jorgensen available for the next two World Cups, with Australia set to host the tournament in just under 20 months before it heads to the United States in 2031.

The length of the contract places Jorgensen in rare company. Four-time John Eales Medallist Michael Hooper, former dual-code star Lote Tuqiri and Jorgensen are the only players to have signed five-year deals with Rugby Australia.

Speaking to reporters in Sydney, Jorgensen played down the idea that a move to league was ever close.

“I didn’t really. I never really explored it,” he said when asked about NRL interest. “I knew I always wanted to stay with the Tahs and the Wallabies so I never really went down that path, which most people knew about. I always wanted to stay in this code.

“It’s not off the table, you never say never, but for the next five years, obviously sticking around here and loving my footy playing here in Australia and for the Tahs.”
