KwaZulu-Natal Acting Police Commissioner Phumelele Makoba has welcomed the 1.7% decrease in murders in the province in the period between April and June.

Inanda had the biggest decrease, with 20 fewer murders, which translates to a decrease of 19%.

Inanda has long been among the top ten police stations countrywide with the highest number of murders.

Makoba released the crime statistics in a media briefing in Durban on Friday.

“Those who refused to be arrested by police and decided to shoot at the police, and police retaliated, fatally wounding them, were the ones who were suspected or were involved in the majority of violent crimes, including murders, robberies, street robberies, house robberies and so on. So we can say, had we not got into confrontation with those criminals of West gang and other groups, particularly in Inanda and other areas in KwaZulu-Natal, we would be seeing more murders.”
