Julius Mkhwanazi arrested on fraud, corruption charges

SABC News has reliably learnt that suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Deputy Chief, Julius Mkhwanaz,i has been arrested on charges of fraud, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice.
Mkhwanazi was arrested by the SAPS’ Madlanga Task Team early on Saturday morning at his home.
Mkhwanazi has spent several days testifying before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry about his dealings with alleged criminal cartel member, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

He has also been accused of running a kidnapping and extortion racket in the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMP).
Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says the search for other suspects is continuing. Mathe says the suspect is expected to appear in court on Monday.
“The SAPS’ Madlanga Task Team has arrested a 50-year-old senior municipal official for fraud, corruption and defeating and/or obstructing the ends of justice. The official was arrested this morning at his home in Gauteng. The Task Team is still searching for other suspects linked to the case. These arrests emanate from an ongoing investigation into corruption within the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD). No further comment will be provided on the merits of the case at this stage. All suspects are expected to appear before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 20 April 2026.”
