Police have arrested a 52-year-old man and seized suspected heroin worth more than R2 million at OR Tambo International Airport.

The South African national had arrived from Accra, Ghana, when police intercepted him during an intelligence-led operation early this morning. A search of his luggage uncovered bullet-like objects and blocks containing substances suspected to be heroin.

The latest arrest brings to three the number of suspected drug mules arrested at the airport in the past three weeks. Police spokesperson Amanda van Wyk says the suspect will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court this week on drug trafficking-related charges.

Van Wyk says, “The latest arrest brings the total number of suspected drug mules arrested at this port of entry to three in the past three weeks. The 52-year-old South African national had just arrived on a flight from Accra, Ghana, when police intercepted him at the airport on Sunday, 20 September. A search of the suspect’s luggage led police to uncover bullet-like objects and blocks containing substances suspected to be heroin. The suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court later this week to face drug-trafficking-related charges, while investigations remain ongoing.”
