Buffalo City ward councillor in court for alleged GBV incident
An African National Congress (ANC) ward councillor in the Buffalo City Metro is expected to appear in court on Friday on allegations of assaulting his wife. Eastern Cape police say the 55-year-old councillor handed himself over to authorities on Wednesday following the allegations.
The councillor is contesting for a second term in the upcoming Local Government Elections (LGE).
Police spokesperson Siphokazi Mawisa says, “Police can confirm that a case of assault was opened at Beacon Bay police station. The 55-year-old male handed himself in at Bukon Bay police station on Wednesday, the 16th of September, 2026, after the allegations of assaulting his wife. He is going to appear before the KuGompo Magistrates’ Court on Friday, the 18th of September 2026. A counter case of malicious damage to property was opened by the alleged suspect against his wife, who was released due to her injuries.”
Meanwhile, the ANC in the Eastern Cape has condemned the alleged incident involving a ward councillor.

Provincial ANC Spokesperson, Yanga Zicina, says internal disciplinary action against the councillor will be instituted.
“The ANC cannot tolerate that some amongst us continue to perpetrate such heinous crimes against women. Gender-Based Violence (GBV) has been declared as national disaster. There is zero tolerance for such in the African National Congress. Such people will also be brought to book inside the ANC using the internal party processes,” adds Zicina.
