111 SAPS members convicted of crimes including murder, GBV: IPID
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) reported to Parliament last Friday that its investigations had led to 111 SAPS members being convicted of various crimes for the 2025/2026 reporting year.
The IPID attributed the increase in convictions to its efforts to tackle a backlog of more than 14000 active cases being handled by under 200 investigators.
The latest IPID report shows that 28 SAPS members were convicted for “Death as a result of police action”, up from 22 in the previous report year, with 10 police officers convicted for “Rape by police officer on/off duty”.
The convicted officers faced sanctions including 10 years’ imprisonment for rape and an additional 2 years for child pornography handed down for a police officer at the Matlelerekeng Police Station in Limpopo.
“What is your theory on how these rapists, fraudsters, torturers, thieves, and even murderers get into the SAPS in the first place?” asked DA member of Parliament, Dianne Kohler, who was alarmed by the high number of active and settled investigations being conducted by the police watchdog.
