Creecy outlines plans to strengthen rail transport and boost economy
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy says the government is working to re-establish rail as the backbone for both passenger and freight transport to reduce road congestion and boost the economy.
Creecy also indicated that 17 new buses have been procured to recapitalise the long-distance fleet, noting that they’re equipped with air conditioning, free Wi-Fi and driver assist features.
This comes as the ministry celebrates transport month to highlight the sector’s vital role in the economy, advance road safety, and showcase public and private infrastructure.
“We’re still somewhere away from revitalising our long-distance passenger rail. What you can see behind me is the first 17 buses that we have bought to recapitalize our long-distance fleet. Currently, we run buses to Limpopo, and also to the Eastern Cape. We are gradually going to replace all of those buses with these brand new buses,” says Creecy.
