Samwu members to show support for arrested protesters
City of Johannesburg employees affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) say they will return to the streets on Wednesday morning in support of their arrested colleagues.
Fourteen union members are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court charged with public violence.
They were arrested on Monday after a protest over a historic R10 billion wage agreement with the City of Joburg brought traffic on the M1 freeway to a standstill.
Samwu Regional Secretary Thobani Nkosi says they were expecting payment in July this year. However, they are now being told they will be paid next year.
“We demand our money and we demand the release of these comrades. We will not leave the streets of Joburg until the employer does something.”
