Bolt is cooperating with police after Durban content creator allegedly kidnapped, robbed

E-hailing service Bolt said it was working with authorities following the alleged kidnapping of Durban content creator Simthande Myeza by one of their drivers.

Myeza was allegedly kidnapped on Tuesday evening, and his bank accounts were cleaned out by the suspects.

KZN police said they were investigating a case of kidnapping.

Senior general manager of Bolt, Lerato Motsoeneng, told IOL that the company is aware of the incident.

We are aware of the incident currently being shared online involving a rider, Simthande Myeza, who reportedly experienced a deeply disturbing situation while using our platform.

“We want to express our sincere concern and sympathy. We are committed to handling this matter with the utmost seriousness and will fully support the relevant authorities in addressing it,” said Motsoeneng.

She went on to say that Bolt reached out to Myeza to find out what occurred on the e-hailing trip and alleged abduction.

“We remain deeply committed to doing everything we can to ensure that every ride on Bolt is a safe and trusted experience. We will continue to work closely with the relevant law enforcement authorities and act decisively as soon as we have the information needed to do so.”

Police said, according to reports, the victim requested the services of an e-hailing vehicle.

“The driver drove towards a different direction and along the way, two other men got into the vehicle and the three men took the victim to a house where he was reportedly made to withdraw an undisclosed amount of money, and was also forced to solicit money from family and friends,” said Netshiunda.

KZN Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli condemned drivers who ‘become criminals’ while they should be conducting their duties.

“It is very unfortunate. We will work with the police to ensure that we address the problem and get closer to the e-hailing industry so that we engage them on the safety measures that they put to ensure the safety of passengers when they are transported,” Ntuli said.

He went on to warn those who use e-hailing services to use only ‘safe’ ones.
