Fort Hare Assassination Plot: Two suspects nabbed in Gauteng after public tip-off

Two suspected hitmen linked to the assassination of Mboneli Vesele, the slain bodyguard of Fort Hare University Vice-Chancellor Professor Sakhele Buhlungu, have been arrested in Gauteng.

The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into the spate of targeted attacks connected to the Eastern Cape tertiary institution.

Vesele was gunned down in his vehicle outside the Vice-Chancellor’s residence in Alice, Eastern Cape, on January 6, 2023.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the arrests follow months of investigation and a public appeal for assistance.

“On June 21, 2025, the team proceeded to Zakkariya Park in Johannesburg following intelligence and information from members of the public,” she said.

Mathe said two of the three wanted suspects, Bafana Chiliza and Nkosiyazi “Dipopoz” Maphumulo, were successfully apprehended and are now in police custody. They will be charged in connection with Vesele’s murder.

The third suspect, Siphiwo “Spijojo” Jejane, remains at large. Police have urged anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts to come forward.

The National Commissioner of SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, has expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the arrests.

“Members of the public play a significant role in assisting the work of the police in apprehending wanted suspects. We thank all stakeholders for playing their part,” he said.

General Masemola also commended the investigating officers for their commitment to solving the case and bringing those responsible to justice.

The SAPS previously issued a J50 warrant of arrest for the three suspects in November 2024, publishing their pictures and calling on the public to assist.

With the latest arrests, the number of suspects detained in connection with the Fort Hare University attacks has now risen to twelve.

Ten individuals were arrested between 2023 and 2024, some of whom remain in custody as investigations continue.
