Police divers continue search for man swept away in Komati River

Police divers in Mpumalanga will continue their search for a 59-year-old man who was swept away in the Komati River in Komatipoort.
Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says the man’s vehicle got stuck in the river while he was trying to cross a submerged low-lying bridge following rains on Monday night.
Masondo says the vehicle has been retrieved from the river.
“When they arrived, they found that there is no one inside the car, but the car was still there stuck. They started to search, they couldn’t find anyone. So, they managed to take the car out of the river. We have done our preliminary investigation to check who the owner of the car is. We found out that the car belongs to a 59-year-old male who is residing in Vanderbijlpark in Gauteng. So, we believe or we suspect that he was alone when he got stuck in the river. We suspect that he jumped out, trying maybe to get out.”
A 59-year-old businessman is believed to have drowned in this crocodile infested Komati River in Komatipoort/Mpumalanga. This is the same river where two SANDF members were swept away in December 2025.
