Limpopo trio accused of insurance-related murders to apply for bail – SABC News
The bail application of a Limpopo police officer and her co-accused, charged with killing nine people for insurance payouts, will resume at the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court today.
Sergeant Rachel Kutumela, her sister Anna Shokane and her daughter, Florah Shokane, have been charged with nine counts of murder and several other charges of insurance fraud amounting to R10 million.
Captain Keshi Mabunda is expected to testify and oppose the bail application.
During the trio’s last court appearance, Mabunda reiterated that they deliberately took accidental cover on the nine people they stand accused of killing.
Some of the victims were found dead under mysterious circumstances.
Most of them were said to have lived with mental and/or physical disabilities.
Mabunda said most died a few months after insurance policies on their lives were taken out by the three accused.
He also said that his investigation has revealed that if released on bail, the three would endanger the lives of more civilians, as they have been attempting to get those close to them to take out cover on others.
