Trump claims ‘substantial progress’ in Ukraine peace efforts – SABC News
Six months after US President Donald Trump berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for not showing enough gratitude for Washington’s military support against Russia, Zelenskyy was back at the White House.
The two heads of state met for the very first time since their Oval Office clash in February. This time, he came with the presidents and prime ministers of several European nations, as well as the heads of NATO and the European Commission, as a show of support.
Trump has welcomed Zelenskyy and several other European leaders and NATO members for bilateral and multilateral talks.
During a press conference in the Oval Office in Washington, D.C., Trump says that substantial progress is being made in his efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Trump says he is confident that he will broker a peace agreement to end the four-year conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump has assured that American troops will be deployed for a peacekeeping mission should there be a necessity, following a multilateral which will be held with other European leaders in Washington.
Presidential elections
Zelenskyy says he anticipates his nation will be able to hold its long-delayed Presidential elections following a possible ceasefire agreement in the ongoing war with neighbouring Russia.
He once more called on the American President to mitigate a peace deal with Moscow.

The meetings follow the Alaska summit between Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, with no final agreement on ending the war in Ukraine.
Trump boasted about his ability to end wars during his media address with Zelenskyy. Trump says he has solved major wars.
“I solved wars that have been going on for 35- 37 – and a couple of quicker wars, one that was going to go into a full-blown deal quickly, you know the one I’m talking about, but they don’t even write about them. No matter what I do, no matter what, and you know, this has nothing to do with you. It’s probably to your advantage in a certain way. But no matter what I do, no matter what deal I make, from my standpoint, you’ll come out good, maybe President Putin will come out good,” says Trump.
