Gina highlights challenge of getting women into top science roles – SABC News
Deputy Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Nomalungelo Gina, says increasing the number of women in senior positions at South Africa’s science institutions remains a challenge.
She was speaking at the South African Women in Science Awards (SAWiSA), hosted on Thursday night at the Imvelo Safari Lodge in Bloemfontein.
Gina praises the finalists in both the emerging and established researcher categories, noting that their groundbreaking work has the potential to improve the lives of ordinary South Africans.
“In the national and development sciences category, finalists are advancing knowledge in areas such as science, critical care, plant pathology, and chemistry,” Gina says.
She says the 2025 SAWiSA sets finalists and winners apart from their counterparts.
Fellowships
Meanwhile, Deputy Director of the Emerging Researcher Programme, Dr. Maphuti Madiga says fellowships will be awarded to women who stood out in their fields.
This year, 30 finalists across four categories, which include Distinguished Women Researchers, Doctoral fellows and Master’s fellows, have been selected.
