Preparations underway for Workers Day celebrations in Polokwane


Preparations are underway to mark the International Workers Day to be held at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo.

Labour Federation, Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), is hosting the national celebrations that coincide with its 40th Anniversary.

Cosatu President, Zingiswa Losi, will deliver the keynote address that will reflect on the state of the trade union movement and the challenges facing workers on the shop floor.

Alliance partners such as the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO), the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP) are expected to deliver messages of support.

International Workers’ Day was first celebrated in South Africa in 1986.

Similarly, workers are set to gather at the Bultfontein Stadium on Friday, where the Free State Workers’ Day commemoration event will be led by Cosatu.

The trade union federation’s 1st Deputy President – Mike Shingange will deliver the keynote address, with messages of support from alliance partners as well as the African National Congress’ (ANC) Secretary General Fikile Mbalula.
