WP’s ‘Sonny Bill’ out to exploit chinks in Pumas’ armour
Western Province’s rising midfield star Gino Cupido is fast making a name for himself, but the Junior Springbok insists he’s staying grounded as he learns his trade in the Currie Cup.
Cupido played a central role in the Junior Boks’ recent triumph at the World Rugby U20 Championship in Italy, and his form has carried over into the Currie Cup – albeit in an under-strength WP side which currently sits bottom of the log.
Results have evaded the Cape side in the tournament so far. In fact they are the only team still winless in this year’s edition.

Cupido has seemingly taken hold of the No 13 jersey from his much-fancied and more experienced teammate Luke Burger, and backline coach Dewaldt Duvenage has likened the 20-year-old from Strand to Sonny Bill Williams – a comparison that speaks volumes about his talent.
For Cupido, though, the privilege of wearing the blue-and-white hoops means far more than any flattering nickname.
“It’s a privilege. For me to play for a team I’ve always supported since I was young is amazing. We’re learning every week and for me, it’s just learning something new every game that’ll help me in my career.”
Despite his rapid rise and a whirlwind last few months, Cupido is determined to keep perspective.
“I just want to ensure that I don’t get my head in the clouds. To keep my feet on the ground.”
Cupido has largely been used at centre and wing in WP’s campaign so far, but the youngster says he’s most comfortable in the midfield, where he has relished playing alongside fellow talents like Damian Markus.
“I prefer playing at centre, but I play at wing or wherever the team needs me to play. I really enjoy playing next to Damian and some of the other young guys. We’re a lot of youngsters in the side and it actually gives me a lot of confidence.”
He’s also been leaning on senior pros from the Stormers to sharpen his all-round game.
“I’ve been chatting a lot to Ruan [Nel], asking him about defence and defensive reads and how I can improve my positioning. Playing centre is not just about attack – defence is also very important.”
For now, “Strand’s Sonny-Bill” is taking it all in his stride – learning, growing, and making sure that he delivers another assured performance against the visiting Pumas on Saturday.
