A Stellenbosch University study has found that South Africa’s education system is at a crossroads with nearly half of public school teachers set to retire in the next decade.
A growing shortage of teachers has sparked uncertainty in the sector.
Bedfordview’s St Benedict’s College Principal Magarita Nichas says, “Why do young people want to come into a school space and then be abused by very angry parents or difficult children and be paid very little for it as well. So, then you do find there is little young people who want to come into the profession and those of us in our 50s are facing retirement within the next 10 years.”
