Tributes pour in for former South African diplomat Mninwa Mahlangu

Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation, Supra Mahumapelo, has expressed profound sorrow at the passing of Mninwa Johannes MJ Mahlangu, a remarkable figure in South Africa’s diplomatic history.

Mahlangu, who served as the former High Commissioner to the Republic of Kenya, tragically passed away on Sunday while en-route to a South African hospital following a short illness.

Mahlangu’s illustrious career spanned various pivotal roles within the South African government. He was not only an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Federal Republic of Somalia but also dedicated his talents as the Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON).

His active involvement in international relations was underscored by a significant position as South Africa’s Ambassador to the United States of America, where he was instrumental in strengthening bilateral ties.

Beyond his diplomatic endeavours, Mahlangu was a key architect of South Africa’s post-apartheid Constitution. His legislative acumen was highlighted by his election to the first democratic Parliament in 1994, where he rose to become the Deputy Chairperson and later, the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces. His efforts laid a foundation for democratic governance and policy-making that has shaped modern South Africa.

The loss of Mahlangu is deeply felt, with Mahumapelo extending heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and former colleagues.

“The committee acknowledges the loss felt by all who knew him. May his soul rest in peace,” he said.

Parliament has also extended condolences to Mahlangu’s family, friends, comrades, and colleagues.
