Premier Ntuli takes action against cross-border crime at Golela Border Post
Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Thamsanqa Ntuli visited the Golela Border Post, between South Africa and eSwatini, and other areas of the Umkhanyakude Municipality, in an effort to strengthen border security, combat cross-border crime, smuggling of illicit goods, and to minimise the rising numbers of undocumented foreigners entering the country.
During his visit, Ntuli inspected the Golela Border Post to see measures that can eradicate the high criminal activities that occur at the border, which overall have a negative impact on the economies of KwaZulu-Natal and eSwatini.
The Premier was notably impressed by the integration of advanced technology, especially drones, which have been pivotal in enhancing border surveillance.
This initiative plays a crucial role in combating cross-border crime, showcasing modern strategies employed by the government.
During his visit, the Premier commended the robust collaboration among various government departments. This teamwork is essential in addressing challenges associated with cross-border criminal activities and ensures a unified approach to law enforcement.
In discussions with Traditional leaders, the Premier addressed the alarming rise in motor vehicle thefts being smuggled into neighbouring countries. He emphasised the need for community involvement alongside law enforcement agencies to tackle this pressing issue collectively.
Community Engagement at the Crime-Fighting Imbizo
The Premier’s final stop was the Crime-Fighting Imbizo held at the Jaba Jaba Sports Field in the Jozini Local Municipality. Here, he engaged directly with community members to discuss ongoing criminal activities and to outline the steps being taken to combat crime in the district.
In his keynote speech, the Premier stressed the critical importance of community safety in the fight against crime. He stated, “Crime is not only a threat to the safety of our citizens but also undermines our economy and social cohesion.” He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that citizens feel secure, borders are fortified, and law enforcement is adequately resourced to protect the people of KwaZulu-Natal.
