Gwabini denies Constable Zungu’s testimony in Meyiwa murder trial – SABC News

Sifiso “Gwabini” Zungu has labelled the testimony by key state witness, Constable Sizwe Zungu, as pure lies. Gwabini is the third witness to be called by the defence in the Pretoria High Court, where five men are on trial for the 2014 murder of the Bafana Bafana captain.

Senzo Meyiwa was shot and killed while at former girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus, on Gauteng’s East Rand.

Constable Zungu testified that all the five accused were at the residence of Gwabini at Basotho hostel in Vosloorus, on that fateful day. Gwabini has refuted Constable Zungu’s claims.

The defence has called Gwabini to testify as his name was mentioned by key witness, Constable Sizwe Zungu, as the person that hosted a gathering at a hostel in Vosloorus 26 October 2014 – the day Meyiwa was murdered.

According to Constable Zungu’s evidence, this was where all the five accused were seen, pre and post the alleged hit on the Bafana Bafana captain.

Responding to defence counsel, Charles Mnisi, Gwabini admitted to knowing all the accused except for accused three, Mthobisi Mncube, the man alleged to be the gunman that fired the fatal shot.

Mnisi: Let’s start with the first gentleman, Muzi Sibiya, do you know him?

Gwabini: Yes I know him. He is my brother. He is the child of my mom’s elder sister.

Mnisi: Number two is Bongani Ntanzi, do you know him?

Gwabini: He is a gentleman that grew up in a different village but we would be coming together for song and dance.

Mnisi: The third gentleman is known as Mthobisi Prince Mncube. Do you know him?

Gwabini: No, I don’t know him.

Gwabini disputed events that allegedly unfolded the day of the hit as described by Constable Zungu.

Mnisi: Now, he says that upon arrival at the the Basotho Hostel, there were also people from the villages back home.

Gwabini: No, he’s telling lies.

Mnisi: He further explained to the court that there was just a mere sitting. You guys were talking, eating, drinking and you were also having some fun through dancing.

Gwabini: He’s lying.

Mnisi: That’s the first people that he recognised as the patrons that were there, it was accused number one, Muzi Sibiya.

Gwabini: No, he’s telling lies.

Constable Zungu alleged he asked Gwabini to keep his service pistol safe in Gwabini’s hostel room.

Zungu had also testified that he witnessed the accused hurrying back into the hostel the evening of the murder and witnessed a firearm being handed to Gwabini.

Gwabini, who is related to Constable Zungu, has, however, distanced himself from these firearm claims.

Mnisi: After you gave him the firearm and then he took the magazine from that firearm, which was a 9 milimetre Z88 Pistol and then he smelled the barrel of the firearm. The reason why he did it it’s because he suspected that something was very suspicious.

Gwabini: Hai this person is telling lies.

Mnisi: Now, he proceeded to tell this court that while in that very same room, he also took the point 38 special revolver from Muzi and looked at it.

Gwabini: He’s telling lies.

Meanwhile, Gwabini says he was also arrested in connection with the Meyiwa murder in 2020, and says police tried to frame him by planting evidence.

Gwabini: I was arrested in 2020.

Mnisi: Was that arrest have something to do with the case?

Gwabini: Yes it was.

Gwabini is expected back on the stand Tuesday morning.
