At least 14 dead as fire engulfs hotel in India’s Kolkata – SABC News


A massive fire in a hotel in India’s eastern Kolkata city killed at least 14 people, officials said on Tuesday night.

The fire broke out at Rituraj hotel in Kolkata where rescuers were seen moving bodies into ambulances, after dousing the blaze.

Kolkata police commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, “The incident of fire that took place at Rituraj Hotel has killed at least 14 people as of now, there was a slight confusion earlier, but we have confirmed now that a total of 14 people have died in this incident.”

Many hotel guests attempted to escape, with one individual sustaining severe injuries after jumping from the building. Several others suffered from suffocation but were successfully rescued and taken for medical treatment, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim said.

“Many guests of the hotel escaped the fire. However, one person jumped out of the building and fractured arms and legs. The person was taken to the hospital in a serious condition. At least five people suffered from suffocation. They were also taken to the hospital for medical treatment. At least 15 people ran to the terrace of the hotel but they were also shifted to a nearby terrace and evacuated safely by firefighters, using a ladder.”

Meanwhile, some guests who had sought refuge on the terrace were safely evacuated to the rooftop of a neighbouring building with the assistance of ladders provided by firefighters.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
