August 22 has been observed as the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief, with an event taking place in Cape Town.

The day has been set aside to condemn targeted violence and terrorism against religious minorities and to promote fundamental religious freedom.

This day was celebrated as the Southern African Leaders Coalition for Faith, Freedom and Justice gathered in the Mother City.

The role and duty of the media was also highlighted. Former Independent Media editor-in-chief, Aziz Hartley, said, “Our role as the media plays a key part in how people’s opinions are formed, what narratives are sketched, and how people are being influenced to think.”

Activist Magdalene Govender said, “Today, we add our collective African voice to a growing international call for fairness, humanity, and respect for religious freedom.”
