Chloe Malle takes the helm at American Vogue, succeeding Anna Wintour

Vogue has announced that 39-year-old Chloe Malle is stepping into the position of “Head of Editorial Content” at American Vogue, effective immediately.

Malle, a fixture at Vogue since 2011, most recently served as the editor of Vogue.com and co-host of its fashion culture podcast, “The Run-Through”.

Her appointment marks a subtle but significant shift in titles as Vogue no longer has an editor-in-chief, and emphasises the digital and cross-platform media drive within the brand.

Reflecting on her promotion, Malle observed: “Fashion and media are both evolving at breakneck speed, and I am so thrilled and awed to be part of that… I also feel incredibly fortunate to still have Anna just down the hall as my mentor.”

Anna Wintour still holds the reins

Although Wintour is stepping away from the day-to-day responsibilities, she remains firmly in place as Condé Nast’s Chief Content Officer and Global Editorial Director of Vogue, overseeing all editions and major Vogue events globally.

Wintour said:  “At a moment of change both within fashion and outside it, Vogue must continue to be both the standard-bearer and the boundary-pushing leader… Chloe has proven often that she can find the balance between American Vogue’s long, singular history and its future on the front lines of the new.”

Under Malle’s stewardship of Vogue.com since 2021, the site has seen a doubling of direct traffic and record growth across key metrics, particularly around flagship events like the Met Gala and Vogue World.

She has also launched creative editorial innovations such as newsletters, the canine-themed “Dogue,” and the Vogue Vintage Guide.

Malle’s editorial experience extends beyond Vogue

A graduate of Brown University, she began her journalism career at the New York Observer and contributed to prestigious outlets such as The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Marie Claire, and Architectural Digest.

Born in New York in 1985 and raised between Los Angeles and New York, she is the daughter of actress Candice Bergen and late director Louis Malle.

With New York Fashion Week, the Met Gala, and Vogue World on the horizon, Malle is expected to lead the magazine’s creative direction and digital expansion, while Wintour remains a guiding force behind the brand’s worldwide strategy.
