Corrected: Limpopo SAPS clarifies outdated Jane Furse police station sign controversy

Police in Limpopo have cleared up renewed social media chatter after an old image of signage at the Jane Furse police station resurfaced online, once again drawing attention for the wrong reason.

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the image circulating online shows an old sign that incorrectly referred to the South African Police Service as the “South African Police Station”, adding that the wording error was corrected several years ago.

The acting Limpopo provincial commissioner, Major General Jan Scheepers, said the image currently circulating is outdated and misleading.

“It must be emphasised that the signage in question was corrected as far back as 2022. The image currently circulating is old and has resurfaced on social media in 2026,” said Scheepers.

While the sign has long been replaced, Scheepers said its reappearance highlights the ease with which old content can be recycled and mistaken for current reality.

An outdated sign previously displayed at Jane Furse police station, which incorrectly referred to the South African Police Service as the “South African Police Station”. Police say the error was corrected in 2022, but the image resurfaced on social media in 2026.

“One of the biggest challenges we face today is the spread of fake news. We urge social media users and the general public to verify information before sharing it, as the dissemination of false or outdated content has the potential to undermine the image and credibility of the South African Police Service,” he said.

Police said the service remains committed to maintaining its corporate image, upholding its values, strengthening public trust and continuing to serve and protect communities.
