The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) says it is satisfied after the Northern Cape High Court extended the provisional liquidation of Ekapa Mine in Kimberley instead of granting a final liquidation order.

The union says it opposed the liquidation application, arguing it would negatively impact workers. This follows a deadly mud rush in February that claimed the lives of five miners.

The matter has now been postponed to the 30th of October.

Numsa local organiser, Lerato Mohatlane says they are happy about the court’s outcome.

“Numsa was there to oppose the liquidation and then also to request an extension on this matter that the liquidation process must not be granted and of which it is something the court did. It agreed to the extension and the liquidation was not granted to Ekapa – which is something that we are happy about. This will allow us now to come back more stronger in terms of finding ways on how we can deal with this matter and it has again opened the gate for workers to access 50% of their pension funds with momentum. So all in all, we are happy.”
