President Cyril Ramaphosa has struck an optimistic tone as he delivered his reply to the State of the Nation Address debate, insisting that, despite criticism from the opposition benches, South Africa is showing clear signs of recovery.

Ramaphosa maintains that progress is not imagined, but evident in key economic indicators and government interventions aimed at stabilising the country’s finances and stimulating growth.

“We have seen promising signs of recovery. Whether people like it or not, it has been there. Whether people think it’s an illusion, it has been there.
Whether people think we have turned the corner or not, they are blind because we are turning the corner. That is where we are. We see this, yes, in the steps that we are taking to reduce unemployment and accelerate growth. We see the signs of recovery in improved public finances, in lower inflation and growth,” says Ramaphosa.

The president also says that through effective macroeconomic management, South Africa has tackled an unsustainable debt burden.
