Electronic Music from South Africa in a Church in Berlin, @BizarreBilly 20260113 TanzinselGenezareth

They invited me to play in a church, and to not play disco. So I thought I brush up the South African House collection that Lulu once gave me. It has a lot of very deep tracks that I don’t feel appropriate to call #afrohouse. It’s also impractical to call it #gqom as only South-Africans would know what it means, let alone pronounce it correctly. So I dared to call this more #afrotechno than #afrohouse. The audience was entirely white. Are we appreciating or appropriating? In any case we pay tribute by citing and buying the songs when they are even available for buying. Here’s a list of insta accounts whose tracks appear in the mix:

Almost all songs are about 12 years old. Apparently there was a particularly creative phase in South African music production at the time which us Europeans missed out on. Many of the artists are internationally acclaimed by now (congratulations!) but they are typically known for more recent tunes than the ones featured here. Probably I’m totally incompetent to be playing this stuff as I haven’t even travelled that far, haven’t participated in any of those raves at that time, but I don’t know anyone else who is playing just this kind of stuff in just this way, so for the time being, if nobody’s offended, once or twice in a year, I’m doing it. And Shumaya rules.
P.S. I have no idea what the singers are singing about. Maybe quite inappropriate for a church? Luckily in Berlin it’s ok to have a laugh about that. Tanzinsel is about getting people together and making them feel good on a journey into music they haven’t heard before, so it did its job. Thank you to all the artists. May your career take you around the world.
