eThekwini residents threaten to protest over proposed tariff hike
The eThekwini Ratepayers Protest Movement (ERPM) in Durban has threatened to take to the streets if the proposed 2026-2027 tariff hikes are implemented.
Mayor Cyril Xaba outlined steep tariff increases in his draft budget.
They include 10.5% sent for electricity and 16% for water.
The movement says the proposed tariff increases are not affordable.
The ERPM’s Chairperson, Asad Gaffar says, “Citizens have spent years complaining about municipal tariff increases that have become unaffordable for many ratepayers. This financial pressure is driving people to desperation as they struggle to pay their bills, yet the city continues to raise rates without considering the residents’ plight. Ultimately, people are left with the difficult choice of paying these high costs or facing repercussions from the city.”
