Evacuation call as Kouga rivers swell

The Kouga Municipality in the Eastern Cape is appealing to residents to remain cautious as water levels continue to rise in the Gamtoos and Kromme rivers.
An appeal has been made to residents staying in these areas to evacuate immediately as the water is coming down fast from the Impofu and Kouga dams into these river systems.
Municipal mayor, Hattingh Bornman, says community halls are available for those who do not have accommodation.
Several roads have been closed at Gamtoos valley in Kouga Municipality in the Eastern Cape due to rocks on the road and flooding, while residents along the Gamtoos River have been urged to evacuate.

‘We are seeing an increase of water over the dam walls, and that would mean a rise in water levels lower downstream in both the Kromme and the Gamtoos rivers,” says Bornman.
He says they are doing everything they can to make sure that roads are safe for motorists to travel.
