Family mourns teen killed in Philippi East mass shooting

The family of one of the victims of Wednesday night mass shootings on the Cape Flats say they were looking forward to his initiation ceremony into manhood next year, but now they have to plan a funeral.
Three people aged 18, 19 and 51 were shot and killed in Tafelsigle on Wednesday night while two others were injured.
In a separate incident in Marcus Garvey, Philippi East, four young men aged between 17 and 20 were killed and three others injured.
The family of 17-year-old Iminathi Nocwanya, a Grade 10 learner, spoke to the SABC at their home in Philippi East.
Nocwanya’s uncle, Lwando Nocwanya, says he was with his friends in the back room adjacent to the main house when the shooting occurred.
“We heard the gunshots, ba! ba! ba!. I lost count of the shots. My older sister, the victim’s mother, stepped outside after the gunmen pointed a firearm at her son. I was watching from a window because I was afraid. I saw one of the attackers who had come to shoot the victims. I feared they might think I was also a friend of Iminathi.”
