Over 50 families in Diphale outside Burgersfort, Limpopo, have been left without proper shelters following persistent heavy rains and thunderstorms.

Twenty other houses in villages in the Fetakgomo- Tubatse Municipality have also been damaged after flash flooding in low-lying areas.

Residents say they have lost furniture and important documents.

“We have been experiencing a lot of rain and as a result the three-roomed house we used to live in has fallen. We have lost a lot of things including furniture and some certificates that I use to look for employment so now the six of us have to share one room and it has been very difficult. Even with food we are struggling and I do not even know what to do as everything is soaked.”

“We are very sad as my sister’s shack has been destroyed. This is where she used to stay with her kids. She has lost furniture including a bed, fridge, wardrobe and storage cabinets. We are so sad as they now do not have a place to call home where they can lay their heads.”

Provincial Co-operative Governance spokesperson Amos Phago, “We are currently doing an assessment in terms of what can be done to assist them to recover and go back to normality. It is a bit of a process because we have to assess individual needs in terms of assistance that is required.”
