Scotland have ended speculation over their head coach position by extending Gregor Townsend’s contract through to the 2027 World Cup – a move that also closes the door on former Springbok flyhalf Franco Smith being elevated to the role.

Townsend, 52, will now guide the Scots into a third World Cup after taking charge in 2017, making him the longest-serving coach of the professional era.

His previous deal was set to expire after next year’s Six Nations, sparking debate about his future following Scotland’s back-to-back fourth-place finishes in the championship and pool-stage exits at both the 2019 and 2023 World Cups.

During that uncertainty, Smith – currently thriving as Glasgow Warriors coach – was strongly tipped as a possible successor. The ex-Bok flyhalf’s stock has risen sharply in Scotland after steering the Warriors to the Vodacom URC title and building a reputation for sharp attacking rugby.

But with Townsend signing on until 2027, Scottish Rugby have opted for continuity, while Smith has also committed his future to Glasgow by agreeing a new deal with the club.

Townsend is expected to outline his long-term vision alongside Scottish Rugby CEO Alex Williamson and performance director David Nucifora on Wednesday.
