‘Full extent of Standard Bank data breach remains unclear’: Regulator
The Information Regulator says the full extent of the recent data breaches at Standard Bank and Liberty remains unclear as it continues to investigate.
The regulator has confirmed it is receiving regular updates from both institutions following the incident on the 23rd of March.
Standard Bank has not disclosed how many clients were affected but says its systems remain secure.
There are concerns that the information, including names, ID numbers and company registration details, could be used to impersonate clients or contact them fraudulently.
Acting senior manager for security compromises in the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) division at the Information Regulator, Deborah Lamola, says they continue to assess the information from Standard Bank.
“Given what we are finding in the notification and what Standard Bank is providing to us, we will then determine the terms of the gravity of the compromise and the appropriate action to take. So, it is safe to say at this point, the regulator is going through that process of assessment and has not yet taken a decision to issue that information notice.”
