Godongwana, PIC board to appear before Parliament
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana and the board of the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) will this evening appear before the Standing Committee on Finance.
This is the first time that the new PIC board will appear before Parliament.
In August, the corporation saw the resignation of several board members, including its chairperson and Deputy Minister of Finance, Dr David Masondo.
Godongwana, last week during the economic cluster question-and-answer session in the National Assembly, told members of Parliament that government had no plans to scrap the PIC unlisted investment portfolio. He said that the PIC board had the necessary capacity, including the expertise required to address the challenges and also strengthen the institution’s operations.
Godongwana has also explained why the register for tender defaulters is empty. He was answering a written parliamentary question from Democratic Alliance (DA) MP, Wendy Alexander.
Alexander asked Godongwana why the National Treasury had failed to populate and enforce the register to implement real consequences for defaulters, 22 years since it was created to protect taxpayers’ money and punish companies that fail to deliver.
Godongwana says the National Treasury does not have control over who must be loaded, and there has not been any organ of state that has submitted that information to National Treasury hence, the register is empty.
