The South African government has welcomed the latest decisive actions by law enforcement agencies, as arrests and raids shake the highest ranks of the police service in the ongoing fight against corruption.

The controversial businessmen, who have been revealed as underworld criminals, Katiso Molefe and Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, have been arrested in connection with active investigations into serious allegations of corruption and misconduct within the SAPS.

In another move, police have also executed search-and-seizure operations at the residences of suspended SAPS deputy commissioner Shadrack Sibiya and Cedric Nkabinde, chief of staff to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.

This happened on Thursday in Johannesburg.

Both National Commissioner Gen. Fannie Masemola and KZN Commissioner Lt-Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi have since appeared before the Madlanga Commission and Parliament’s ad hoc committee probing systemic corruption in SAPS.

In a statement issued Thursday, the government reiterated its unwavering support for law enforcement agencies, noting that these operations are “within the normal scope of their mandate to investigate matters and recover assets.”

“These activities are a standard and essential part of the government’s fight against corruption, ensuring accountability and upholding the rule of law,” the statement read.

The government has urged the public and stakeholders to allow law enforcement agencies the space to do their work without disruption or interference, expressing full confidence in their legal and constitutional conduct.

The crackdown underscored the government’s broader commitment to restoring integrity, accountability and trust in state institutions.

Meanwhile, the committee session continues on Friday, during which Masemola faces questions from the members.
