Gqeberha schoolboy dies during rugby practice
A 17-year-old Gqeberha schoolboy died after getting injured while practising rugby on Thursday.
In full view of shocked teammates, Westering High pupil Kungawo Booi was injured on the field and died shortly after medical personnel arrived.
Police spokeswoman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said Kabega Park police had opened an inquest.
“According to preliminary reports, Kabega Park police responded to a complaint at a high school in Westering,” she said.
“On arrival, they were informed that Kungawoo was busy practicing rugby when he was injured.
“He received medical attention on the scene but passed away.”
Westering High principal Hugo Muller said the school was mourning the loss.
“Our school community is absolutely heartbroken,” Muller said on Friday.
“Our thoughts are with his family, friends and the staff of the school.”
He said pupils who witnessed the incident would receive counselling, and support would also be offered to staff affected by the tragedy.
Muller said he planned to meet with Kungawoo’s family on Friday.
He said more details could not immediately be shared.
