Grade 8 learner collapses and dies at Qalabotjha Secondary School in Vlakfontein
A Grade 8 learner tragically died after collapsing at Qalabotjha Secondary School in Vlakfontein, Gauteng on Tuesday.
Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) spokesperson, Steve Mabona, said the learner suddenly collapsed at the school and died before emergency services could attend her.
“The school immediately contacted her family and emergency services, with police and an ambulance responding swiftly to the scene. Unfortunately, she was certified dead at school,” said Mabona.
The heart-wrenching event has been particularly poignant for her family, as the deceased has two siblings who are still enrolled at the same institution: a brother in Grade 10 and a sister in Grade 12.
The unfortunate incident occurred while her sister was taking a Business Studies examination. Mabona confirmed that she has since received the necessary curriculum support and guidance.
Mabona further stated that the department would immediately send psychosocial support teams to the school. These teams will provide assistance to learners, staff, and the grieving family as they cope with the emotional distress of this sudden and tragic loss.
“We are devastated by the passing of one of our learners. Losing a child so suddenly is an unimaginable tragedy that no parent, sibling, or school community should ever have to face. Our hearts go out especially to her brother and sister, who are also learners at the school, as they navigate this painful moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and everyone at Qalabotjha Secondary during this difficult time,” said MEC of Education Matome Chiloane.
