The South African Weather Service has forecast persisting heavy rains and cooler temperatures in most of the country this long weekend.

The rains could lead to localised flooding. Meanwhile, a cold front will hit the Western Cape. Forecaster, Puseletso Mofokeng. 

“Temperature conditions could be expected to be cooler in Mpumalanga, Gauteng, North West and Free State, and other than that much of the country will see thunderstorms, but we are expecting severe thunderstorms in the south eastern parts of the Northern Cape in Prieska, De Aar and Carnarvon, and moving to tomorrow we are expecting no rainfall over Limpopo, eastern Free State and Gauteng, however the western parts of the North West will see some isolated thunderstorms.”

SAWS issued a warning for heavy rains over parts of Johannesburg and surrounding areas.

This raises a risk of localised flooding.

Severe thunderstorms and cool conditions will accompany the rain. 

Forecaster, Lehlohonolo Thobela, “If you will be over the southwestern parts of Gauteng, expect a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms, including the western parts of Johannesburg, and note that a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms has been issued by the South African Weather Service, with these conditions expected to result in heavy downpours that may lead to localised flooding over most western areas of Johannesburg and extending into other parts of the province, including areas such as Fennaging through to Soweto.”
