Huguenot Tunnel reopens ahead of holiday return travel

The Huguenot Tunnel and Toll Plaza have officially reopened to traffic, just in time for the end of the school holidays and the expected influx of holidaymakers returning home.

According to the Western Cape Department of Mobility, the reopening follows the conclusion of thorough inspections and assessments by the designated professional engineering team and the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL).

While the tunnel is once again operational, temporary safety measures and restrictions are in place as permanent repair work continues.

Motorists are advised that lane widths will be restricted northbound between Blocks 418 and 429 due to barriers and scaffolding, and speed limits will be reduced to 60 km/h through most of the tunnel, and 40 km/h in the affected area.

In addition, the Du Toitskloof Pass remains closed in both directions while work continues on that route.

Western Cape Minister of Mobility, Isaac Sileku, welcomed the reopening, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the closure.

“I thank all our teams and SANRAL for their hard work in ensuring that this key transport link is safely reopened,” said Sileku.

“We understand the closure caused severe inconvenience. But safety was and remains our highest priority.”

The reopening is expected to ease congestion and relieve pressure on alternative routes that have carried additional traffic during the closure.
