Durban’s coastline was stretched to capacity on Tuesday as thousands of people poured onto the city’s beaches to celebrate Reconciliation Day.
The Golden Mile, North Beach, and South Beach were packed shoulder to shoulder, with barely a patch of sand visible beneath a sea of umbrellas and towels.
Perfect summer weather, with temperatures around 28°C and a gentle breeze, drew crowds from early morning.
Families, friends, and tourists waded into the waves, kids darting through the surf while surfers battled the steady swells.
The shoreline was a hive of activity, from boogie boarders in the water to vendors hustling along the promenade to meet the overwhelming demand for snacks and drinks.
Lifeguards remained on high alert as the busy conditions made swimming more challenging, but the day remained largely incident-free.
As the sun began to set, the beaches were still thronged with people reluctant to leave, capturing the essence of a city coming alive for one of South Africa’s most symbolic holidays.
