Investment in tech to ease Beitbridge immigration pressure: Schreiber

Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber says investment in personnel and technology will assist in resolving illegal immigration challenges experienced at the Beitbridge port-of-entry in Musina, Limpopo.

Schreiber has conducted an oversight visit, which assessed operational readiness and personnel deployment ahead of the Easter weekend.

He was accompanied by the Border Management Authority Commissioner, Dr Michael Masiapato.

Schreiber says the technology available at the port-of-entry is proving to be effective.

“I think what we are demonstrating today is that we can fix this problem, we can address it. I think if you look across the river, you actually see people there watching on the other side. And this is a really important part of the work that BMA has been doing, which is to focus on the deterrent”.

“We have seen some positive signs. If you look at the most recent festive season, the number of people attempting to cross has gone down meaningfully. We are engaging with some members of the SANDF colleagues. They have observed the same thing; they were saying at some points you might apprehend 80 people a day, now it’s down to two or three, in this sort of hotspot we see today”, Schreiber adds.
