K9 bust leads to R720,000 dagga haul in Vredendal
Police in the Western Cape have arrested two foreign nationals after seizing R720,000 worth of cannabis in Vredendal-North.
According to the police, the suspects were arrested in a joint operation by the Provincial Organised Crime (Narcotics) unit, SAPS Vredendal Crime Prevention Unit, and the Namaqualand K9 Unit.
“On Wednesday, 24 December 2025, at approximately 06:00, members attached to the Provincial Organised Crime investigations (Narcotics) based in Vredendal, in conjunction with SAPS Vredendal Crime Prevention Unit and Namaqualand K9 Unit, conducted a search warrant operation at a premises in Steve Biko Street, Vredendal-North,” the police said.
The police added that a K9 dog named Bessie gave a positive indication to a black travel bag hidden underneath a bed. Upon further inspection, the bag was found to contain parcels of higher-grade indoor cannabis weighing almost 9 kilograms, with an estimated street value of R720,000.
“The K9 dog (Bessie) gave a positive indication to a black travel bag, which was hidden underneath a bed. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the bag contained parcels of higher-grade indoor dagga. The dagga had a weight of almost 9 kg, with an estimated street value of R 720 000.00,” the police added.
The two men have been charged with dealing in drugs and violations of South Africa’s Immigration Act. Police said the suspects are expected to appear in the Vredendal Magistrates’ Court on December 29 2025.
“Two Tanzanian foreign nationals, aged 25 and 30, were arrested and charged for dealing in drugs and the Illegal immigrants Act 13/2002/49(1). The suspects will appear in the Vredendal Magistrates’ Court on 29 December 2025”.
