Deputy President Paul Mashatile says Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) will not be scrapped, as it continues to advance economic empowerment and the marginalised. Mashatile was addressing delegates at the 2nd Frank Dialogue on B-BBEE in Durban.

The event brings together leaders from business, government, civil society and the ocean economy. It comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa, in his State of the Nation Address (SONA), doubled down on B-BBEE in South Africa. He said instead of loosening the laws or heeding calls to abolish it, the country should lean into taking B-BBEE further.

Mashatile also provides insight on government’s achievements and action plan on the B-BBEE.

“After more than 30 years of democracy, we can say that entrenched economic patterns remain, and we must address them honestly with evidence and with a commitment to practical action. I think that is very important. I fully agree with the prevailing view among panellists that it is crucial to address the historical inequities for fostering inclusive growth, emphasising the need for transformative policies such as BBBEE. However, I acknowledge that the implementation of B-BBEE has faced inconsistencies.”
