Monday's weather: Level 4 storm warnings in place for north-eastern parts of South Africa
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued Yellow Level 4 warnings for severe thunderstorms along the escarpment and eastern highveld of Mpumalanga, as well as the northern parts of Limpopo.
The weather service said these events, anticipated for Monday, January 5, could bring heavy downpours and damaging winds to the aforementioned areas, leading to localised flooding of susceptible roads and settlements as well as damage to infrastructure.
The SAWS also issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms over the central and eastern parts of Limpopo, the highveld and lowveld of Mpumalanga, eastern parts of the Free State and south-western areas of North West. This Level 2 warning also extends to the KwaZulu-Natal midlands as well as the western parts of the province.
These areas could also experience heavy downpours and damaging winds, putting roads and infrastructure in danger.
Furthermore, extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the Kai !Garib local municipality of the Northern Cape.
