With only few hours left before the latest fuel price increases take effect, motorists are making their way to filling stations to top up their tanks ahead of the midnight deadline.

From midnight, petrol prices will increase by between R3.12 and R3.33 per litre, depending on the grade.

Diesel will rise by between R2.84c and R3.24c per litre, while illuminating paraffin will increase by R4.77c per litre. There have been calls on government to implement austerity measures to help cushion citizens from the sharp increases.

Some motorists say they have had to adjust their lifestyles in recent months to cope with the rising cost of fuel.

β€œI have to constantly relook my budget. I constantly have to take out money from my savings or take out money from money that I was supposed to allocate to myself for fun or whatever and relook at my budget, rethink how I spend, how I transport myself. I have to rethink if I want to travel. Do I want to go by car? Do I have to walk places or whatever? I need to reduce my traveling. As I said, it’s a whole trip between here and Centurion. So, it just means now I’m traveling less, a whole lot less for the same amount,” says a consumer.
