Over 2 500 residents displaced after heavy rains in E Cape

Over 2 500 residents have been displaced following heavy rains in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality in the Eastern Cape in the past 48 hours.
The municipality says at least 21 wards have been affected with 141 incidents recorded, dozens of homes have been flooded and roads remain closed.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) had earlier issued a warning for disruptive rainfall.
“The roads are still closed and everybody who are moving around, they must just move around with caution because the soil is still saturated, and we don’t want to have any fatalities reported as at now. We have not yet had reports of fatalities and we want to keep it like that,” says municipality’s director for Safety and Security, Shadrack Sibiya.

Body recovered
Police have confirmed that they’ve found the body of a 40-year-old male who was swept away in flood waters last night in Waboomskraal, outside George in the Western Cape.
Police spokesperson, Chris Spies, says his body was successfully recovered on Friday morning.
The victim was swept into the swollen Kliprivier, along with a woman who was rescued. However, the search for him was called off and resumed early this morning.
Police and rescue officials are currently on the scene.
This is the first casualty of the storm which started on Tuesday and continued into late last night. It brought with it heavy rain, floods, landslides and rockfalls, with up to 200mm of rain being measured in some areas.
