Petrol crosses R30 mark: Desperate calls for immediate govt relief
Motorists have appealed to the government to intervene and cushion them against high fuel prices.
From midnight, the petrol price has breached the R30-per-litre mark for the first time.
Diesel has risen by between R2.84 and R3.24 per litre, while illuminating paraffin will increase by R4.77 per litre.
Organised labour, taxi associations and political parties are among those who have called on government to implement measures to help cushion citizens from sharp increases.
Motorists say they have had to adjust their lifestyles in recent months to cope with the rising cost of fuel.
“I have to constantly relook at my budget. I constantly have to take out money from my savings or take out money from money that I was supposed to allocate to myself for fun or whatever and relook at my budget, rethink how I spend, how I transport myself”, said one motorist.
Another said, “I have to rethink if I want to travel, do I want to go by car, do I have to walk to places or whatever. I need to reduce my travelling. As I said, it’s a whole trip between here and Centurion. So it just means now I’m travelling less, a whole lot less for the same amount.”
