PICS: Vehicle stolen in 2023 recovered at Middelburg Toll Plaza, Ethiopian national arrested
A 38-year-old Ethiopian national was arrested after a stolen vehicle was recovered during a police roadblock at the Middelburg Toll Plaza in Mpumalanga.
According to the South African Police Service, police officers were conducting roadblock operations at about 11.50 am on Monday when they stopped a grey Nissan NP200 with Gauteng registration plates.
“The vehicle was stopped and the members introduced themselves to the driver,” said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane.
Ndubane said permission was requested to search the vehicle and was granted. “During the search, members observed that the vehicle licence disc had expired three years ago,” she said.
She added that further verification revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen in Benoni in 2023.
“The driver was requested to produce documentation for the vehicle but failed to do so. He was subsequently arrested for possession of stolen property,” Ndubane said.
She said the vehicle was confiscated for further investigation and that the suspect is expected to appear before the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
Ndubane said the acting provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, “welcomed the arrest and reiterated that the police remain committed to combating crime and ensuring the safety of all communities”.
